Photography and Me

Hi, I’m John Medany, a freelance photographer based in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. My photography is all about capturing real, unfiltered moments—whether it’s the energy of a street scene, the atmosphere of an event, or the quiet character of a place. I call these “Unpolished Moments”—authentic, unscripted snapshots of life as it happens.

I’ve always been drawn to street photography, but over time, my work has expanded to include events—from vibrant urban gatherings to country shows and community celebrations. I focus on the connection between people and their surroundings, telling stories through spontaneous interactions, fleeting glances, and the subtle details that others might overlook. Black and white is my go-to medium, but I use colour when it adds something extra to the mood or message of an image.

Beyond shooting, I love teaching and mentoring. I’ve organized small photography meet-ups, sharing skills and ideas with others who are just as passionate about capturing the world around them. I believe photography should be accessible to everyone, not just an exclusive club, and I enjoy helping people develop their eye and confidence behind the camera.

Right now, I’m working towards an MA in Photography, pushing myself to refine my practice and explore new ideas. My influences range from Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank to Martin Parr and Stephen Shore, and I admire photographers who evolve without losing their essence. That’s my goal too—to keep growing while staying true to the instinctive, honest approach that defines my work.
